What to prepare before meeting your jewellery designer

Congratulations for taking the first step  towards experiencing the joy of possibilities with  bespoke jewellery.  Most our client’s first response is “I don’t have a clear idea what it should look like”.  And trust us, thats perfectly OK and normal! As its the designer’s job to understand your preferences and provide the creative input to make your desires come alive.

Whether it is a simple restyle or the creation of  one-of-a-kind pieces of jewellery, here are some helpful tips when working with a bespoke jeweller

1. Do you have any existing pieces you will like to repurpose & restyle?

• • This is the fun part… some of our clients already have an idea. Some (including myself) need to rummage through our jewellery boxes to find whats buried in there. 
  • What about loose gemstones or precious gifts handed down by your grandmother or mother? Jade pieces, sapphires/ruhies
  • Not to worry about how small or tiny they are so long as they are genuine gemstones. If you are not sure, just bring them along and let Karen give you expert assessment and advice on how you may use or not use them.

2. Your lifestyle considerations?

• • What type of accessories do you tend to wear often?
  • Is it something you will like to have for daily work wear or for special nights out?  Or both? Example – we created “3 in 1′ design earrings so our client can wear it as a stud or a short dangle to a full on glamorous night out.
  • Practical needs?  Example – we had a mommy who asked for bezel setting designs so she can carry her babies and not let her jewellery get in the way. Or you are someone who enjoys an active lifestyle ?
  • Looking for a special statement piece to add a punch to your wardrobe?  Or something versatile and complementary that you would like to add to your existing collection?
  • Most importantly do you have any existing pieces you would like to repurpose?

3. Your “design style” preference?

• • It need not be in detailed design (that’s the job of the designer!). But you should narrow down what designs “Speaks to you” and what doesn’t.
  • The styles or design types that you like… Classical? Modernistic? Detailed? Simple?

4. Collate pictures of jewellery that “speaks to you” and show them to the designer.

• • Our eyes are trained on things we like… even if you cant quite describe what it is you like about the design. So collating some pictures are most helpful to “visualize” your preference.

5. Be open to exploring new design ideas proposed by the designer

• •  Let them help you translate your preferences into something uniquely you.  A good designer will not impose their designs but instead listen to your preferences and designs that are suitable based on that. Do not be afraid to let your designer know what you are uncomfortable with. They are help to explore options with you.
